The “appearance of age” problem

Posted in age of the earth with tags , , , on June 10, 2008 by airtightnoodle

The blogger at Servant’s Thoughts has provided some interesting food for thought on the young earth/old earth debate within the Christian realm.

Many “young earthers” state that God created the earth with an appearance of being older than it really is. Servant points out:

If God would create the appearance of age in an earth 6,000 – 10,000 years old, how can we be certain this earth did not come into being only 100 years ago with the appearance of a much older earth – with developed ecosystems, geological foundations, developed human society and an ‘implanted’ biblical record?

You can read the rest of the implications Servant points out about this line of thinking here.

Life Has a History

Life Has a History…Very cool website from Berkeley that talks about geologic time, the fossil record, speciation, etc. I booked the computer lab one day and used this with my level freshman biology classes (choose level 2). I used a worksheet from Biology Corner to go along with it. The students really seemed to enjoy it and it kept them occupied the entire period (we currently have 50 minute periods). In fact, some didn’t finish, so since I only booked the lab for one day, I just graded what they had, because they really enjoyed it and worked diligently the entire time.
